It seems that I am somewhat obsessed with tiles… History, Colonialism and merchants has been of interest to me for quite a while. This is also true for ceramics. So as a call for wanting to work with ceramics, but still with an interest in the relationship between The Netherlands and China, I decided to make these Sino-Dutch Tiles.
The tiles are inspired by the fake Chinese porcelain tiles adapted by the Dutch, as a result of trading with China in the 17th and 18th century. I did a lot of research on this history, as well as the current ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ that China has with the Netherlands. I took this research and depicted my reflections of that on the tiles in image and text. The idea was to create a loose narrative touching on all the aspects of my research: reputation of China, extensive numbers of traded items, sea travel and Voyage!
I had made the tiles to also be scattered and presented at an exhibition, dispersing them around the space, giving viewers an opportunity to look for the tiles, or to be surprised. However, the exhibition never happened, so now I am making considerations of scattering them around places relevant to the story of the tiles in the public space around The Hague.
